How do older adults prefer to discuss cancer screening cessation with their clinicians? Does regular coffee consumption impact mortality? Kieran Quinn and Emily Hughes cover two thought provoking new studies.

Choosing Wisely recommends that clinicians should not routinely screen for cancer in patients with limited life expectancy, but this is not what happens in practice. Many older adults with limited life expectancy are still frequently screened. Emily covers a qualitative study which examines older adults’ thoughts on cancer screening cessation and preferences on how clinicians should communicate the decision to stop screening.

Next, what better way to kick off a new year than a big data study examining something that many of us do daily – drink coffee! Kieran covers the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study which examines the association between coffee drinking and mortality.
