Summer Replay – Bugs & Drugs: Antibiotics in Aspiration Pneumonia, Choosing Wisely in Cellulitis Evaluation, and Demystifying the Editorial Process

Subscribe on iTunes

This week The Rounds Table is packed with the latest on bugs and drugs as well as a special segment on the editorial process. Dr. Paul Bunce, Infectious Diseases physician, and Kieran Quinn cover antibiotics in aspiration pneumonia and choosing wisely in cellulitis evaluation. Emily Hughes and Sheliza Halani speak with Dr. Matt Stanbrook, Deputy Editor at CMAJ, to demystify the editorial process.

Common teaching is that aspiration pneumonitis on its own does not require antimicrobials, but there is not much evidence to justify this. Many physicians end up “caving in” and using antimicrobials in these cases when they see them in practice. Paul takes listeners through an article which examines whether prophylactic antimicrobial therapy administered in the setting of acute aspiration pneumonitis results in better outcomes than supportive care only.

Kieran then covers the clinical usefulness of imaging and blood cultures in cellulitis evaluation. Cellulitis is a fairly common infectious illness, and current recommendations advise against imaging and blood cultures in most cases. But how often do clinicians turn up their noses at these guidelines? Kieran takes listeners through the evidence.

Next, a special segment. For those who tune in regularly, you know that our show highlights advances in research from the major medical journals. What we don’t usually cover is the editorial process – what does it take for a manuscript to be accepted for publication? Emily and Sheliza interview Matt from CMAJ.

Finally, the Good Stuff segment. Paul shares an article on the importance of infectious diseases consultations. Kieran shares an article on gender bias in Ob-Gyn.
