“I do shift work, I don’t work every day and sometimes I miss information that is communicated by management. I find I’m constantly checking my emails, even on weekends, just to keep up with the new information.
Just two months ago, we would never wear the same mask into a different patient’s room, let alone all day. We are constantly having to adjust to the new norm.
At the same time, I recognize a stronger level of support and teamwork amongst our staff through these tumultuous times. We’re all working very hard together to care for and protect our patients as well as ourselves.
As huge travellers, my fiancé and I had a few trips booked and planned for the year – trekking Machu Picchu, Everest Base Camp and outdoor rock climbing in Yosemite as well as taking our engagement photos in Alberta. These plans have had to be postponed or cancelled.
I rarely see my parents anymore since I don’t live with them.
When I do want to see my parents, my fiancé and I make the 45 minute drive to stand in the driveway to talk with them from their front door for a few minutes and make the drive back home right after.
My grandma (who turned 100 years old recently!) is too afraid to open the door anymore since she is vulnerable.
The patient population I take care of can sometimes stay in the hospital for weeks if not months before being discharged.
Having their friends and family come in to visit is a major part of their treatment and recovery process. Now they can’t visit.
They cannot just bring food or a change of clothes for patients. They have to go through a process to have them inspected and wiped down before being brought to patients.”
