“I work in the airline industry as a flight attendant. This directly impacts my work environment as we tend to be in close contact with passengers throughout the flight. Not to mention, being in an aircraft with no fresh air is not the most comforting thought or the safest of situations during this time.
This is probably not a popular sentiment, but I felt somewhat calm and at peace with the idea of working when COVID-19 was initially becoming an issue and drastically affecting travel.
I figured I would take the necessary precautions and hope that it was enough. I must admit, we were not provided with adequate protection at first.
Passengers were still coming from all over, connecting from places with a high number of cases. We have made alterations to the service and it has greatly limited the contact between crew and passengers.
It took a while to have N95 masks available to us as crew. They only recently provided protective garments for us to wear over our uniforms.
As the severity of the situation progressed and the quarantine was imposed, I no longer felt comfortable working. On my last couple of flights, there were connections coming from all kinds of vacation and sun destinations – Cancun and Barbados. As many as 50 passengers coming from vacation, when they had multiple opportunities to come sooner.
I have seen passengers take very little precautions to protect themselves and others on the flight and it speaks volumes about how we as a society are handling this pandemic.
We need to do better and we need to push people to be better.
Unfortunately, with the current travel restrictions and quarantine order, travel is at an all-time low, so I am laid off like the majority of the population for now.”
