This is Abby. She is a surgical nurse.
“Earlier this month, I was caring for an elderly patient who learned that their son was hospitalized in another province.
It was really difficult to witness this patient, who was already ill, grieving alone without any comfort from their loved ones.
I took a moment to sit with them, to hear their worries and provide emotional support. I reached out to spiritual care and to our unit social worker to see if we could arrange a video call with their son – this call eventually happened.
I could tell that this patient was very appreciative of my efforts. It was so rewarding to see the results of my actions and the impact nurses have on their patients. It’s a privilege to know that the work I am doing is worthwhile and making a difference.
This outbreak has added a new level of stress and fear for my colleagues and I. All I can think about is to do my job to the best of my ability while trying to adequately protect myself. While it’s been a struggle, there have been moments where I am reminded of the important role I play not only as a healthcare worker, but also a patient advocate.”
