This is Emilia. She is a nurse working in the NICU, where she cares for new born babies.
“I have cared for infants as premature as 23 weeks gestation. These microprems have had to endure numerous challenges during their NICU course, and are able to overcome obstacles that you think wouldn’t be possible. Many of these infants are battling for their lives from the moment they are born.
It has been a challenge to adapt my job to care for this vulnerable patient population. Neonates are unique in that they are fragile and have virtually no immune system to help them fight off disease. A neonate contracting COVID-19 could very well be deadly.
Despite the stress and anxiety I feel, I come into work everyday with the intention of providing the most optimal care to the tiniest humans.
My organization continues to work tirelessly to implement new and constantly changing policies to protect all staff and patients. Despite our visiting policy changing – now allowing only one parent to visit each baby every 24 hours – we are still making sure that each neonate receives holistic and individualized care.
Having a support system in place has allowed me to face this pandemic one day at a time. Being able to take time for myself and find ways to cope helps me stay in a positive headspace, and stay strong physically and mentally while I continue the fight against COVID-19.”
