“The most emotional experience I had was when a patient unexpectedly passed away. We kind of realized that they were declining. We called the family to come into the hospital because they are allowed to come in if we’re expecting death to be occurring soon. By the time the family arrived, the patient had already passed away. They hadn’t seen their loved one for several weeks and they weren’t able to have a final goodbye.
I know that it’s so important to be with your loved ones when they’re passing away. The closure is part of the grieving process.
Because of the situation we’re in, people aren’t getting that closure. It’s devastating.
I was the one who had to communicate it to the family. That was the hardest thing to go through. It wasn’t really directly related to COVID but it was a result of it. “
