“I got redeployed from the outpatient Senior Center to the hospital on the acute medicine unit. It has been challenging because we usually work with our patients towards getting them out of the hospital but with COVID, it has been quite difficult seeing our patient’s decline. A lot of the seniors are declining just being in hospital and are not able to be discharged back into their rehab, seniors home or to their loved ones.
It’s also been difficult to see the virtual visits patients are having with their family members through an iPad. We know that patients need visitors but right now their family members cannot visit. We’re working to do our best to keep them positive, motivated, and active.
We are in the process of opening a virtual program at the senior’s health centre.
It’s the program we usually run [in person]. It’s more of a one-on-one type of thing with the patient, physio, OT and the rehab assistant.
We’re hoping that once things open up slowly, visitors and family members will be able to come into the hospital. I think the emotional and mental aspect plays a huge role in what we’re going through.”
