This is Lauren. She is a registered nurse in Toronto.
“The day-to-day life of being a nurse hasn’t been very different, but there is more stress and panic in the hospital environment. We are screened for COVID symptoms when entering. We’re always wearing masks. It’s all the media ever seems to talk about.
I only wear hospital-issued scrubs, change my shoes before I get into my car, and wipe my phone and wallet three times.
I’m continually washing my work coat, which I’ve never done before. I leave my work purse in my car, and I only shower in one washroom while my partner showers in another. I bag everything more now – it’s a lot more washing, and just being a lot more careful.
I feel like our profession has been getting a lot more respect since COVID, which is nice to see, but I think we’re ready for life to start going back to normal.
Lauren wrote an opinion piece called “Suddenly, I’m not ‘just a nurse’”. The piece further explores Lauren’s experiences as a registered nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic.
