This is Kevin. He is an emergency room physician in Hamilton, ON.
“The hardest part of my job during the COVID-19 pandemic is the anticipation of the unknown.
As ER physicians, we are trained to anticipate the worst-case scenarios so that patients can be safely triaged and taken care of. However when the pathology can subsequently infect you and your team’s wellbeing, your entire world changes – and so does your approach to practicing medicine.
Our fears of the unknown and unfamiliarity can slowly take over our vulnerable minds. This can affect our performance, our room for empathy, and impact our own mental health.
After all, we are all human and are not invincible as we are sometimes portrayed to be.
Our concerns and fears will not simply go away on their own, but we can comfort one another knowing that we are all in this together. I have begun to open up about my thoughts and emotions. I see others doing the same. This builds up our fortitude to keep marching on, one day at a time.”
