Can doctors’ offices make you pay to access your own files?

    • Sophie says:

Of course! They always require you to pay to access for your own personal health information. They will tell you that the fee is for “staff time to photocopy the records” that they will provide to you.

Access to your files – online – is without cost through the hospital’s patient portal section. You can then of course print your records on your own computer. Having said this, not all hospitals (many smaller hospitals) do not have this function but the larger ones do – depends on where you live.
