It’s a new year, which means new theme music for The Rounds Table! This week, Kieran and Jay take listeners through alternatives to inpatient hospitalization and the effects of PPIs on community acquired pneumonia.
Hospitals often operate at over 100% capacity, and inpatient care is expensive – it accounts for 32% of US healthcare dollars! Jay takes listeners through a systematic review of systematic reviews examining alternative strategies to inpatient hospitalization for acute medical conditions. Is there a difference in mortality or disease specific outcomes? Listen to find out!
Next, Kieran takes listeners through a cohort study and self-controlled case series examining the association between PPI use and community acquired pneumonia. While there is biologic plausibility for this association, the evidence is unclear, especially in the outpatient setting. Is the link due to the prescription of PPIs themselves, or features related to unmeasured patient factors? Kieran and Jay discuss the intriguing statistical analysis.
Last, but definitely not least, the Good Stuff segment! Jay discusses the first FDA approved artificial pancreas and Kieran discusses health concerns in farmland-rich California.
