Can probiotics help my depression?

    Probiotics work well for me.
    I love yoghurt and also take a probiotic tablet each day.
    The results are very good, my whole digestive system is better off.
    I am very health conscious and I am an avid reader of the latest health news and studies. I agree that probiotics are the answer to a lot of health problems.

    This is a great review, we do need additional research. Keeping in mind that our patients are already reaching for probiotics to improve their mood, and they are making a selection based on popular (often misleading) headlines.     Probiotics are a very good option for gut support. Will it “heal depression”? who knows really…nothing in research is yet definitive about this. However, there are many benefits to probiotics as they essentially will support digestive processes by helping to balance out good/bad bacteria. It is my opinion that everyone should take probiotics, especially if you have gut issues or take antibiotics frequently (as antibiotics will kill bad as well as good bacteria in the gut). It doesn’t hurt to try it for a couple of months to see if you notice a difference. You won’t be harmed by taking a probiotic.

      Agree with the statement that all commercially available probiotic products are likely safe for most of our patients. We need to be more specific with our recommendations: as per McFarland study ( McFarland LV, Evans CT and Goldstein EJC (2018) Strain-Specificity and Disease-Specificity of Probiotic Efficacy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Front. Med. 5:124.doi: 10.3389/fmed.2018.00124 ) , recommendations should be strain and disease (or outcome) specific.
