Clear Mind, Clear Body: Cardiovascular Disease in Migraine and Decision to Transfer to the ED After a Fall

Subscribe on iTunes

This week on The Rounds Table we are covering new evidence on two important topics: migraine and risk of cardiovascular disease, and a clinical decision rule for Emergency Department transfer of older individuals who have sustained a fall. Laura Walker and Kieran Quinn highlight the key points for listeners.

Migraines are a very common primary headache disorder, affecting approximately 15% of the population at some point in their lives. Laura shares an article which examines the association between migraines and cardiovascular diseases.

Next, unintentional falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injury for adults aged 65 and older. Residents of assisted living facilities may not be seriously ill or injured after a fall, but policies often require immediate transfer to an ED regardless of their condition. Kieran covers a study which examines a clinical decision rule to assess an individual’s safety at their assisted living facility without automatically transferring to the ED.

Finally, the Good Stuff segment. Laura covers an article on practical recommendations for managing in-flight medical emergencies. Kieran shares an article on treatment with beta blockers after a heart attack.
