Sugar Coating Diabetes Meds? Oral Antiglycemics and Diabetes Management, Rapid Fire

It’s diabetes week on The Rounds Table. Mike Fralick and Kieran Quinn are back with the latest evidence in another Rapid Fire episode: four articles covered instead of the usual two.

Canagliflozin has an impressive cardiovascular benefit profile for patients with a high burden of cardiovascular disease, based on data from randomized control trials. Mike covers an article which investigates if this benefit translates to patients without a high burden of cardiovascular disease.

SGLT-2 inhibitors may confer benefit to patients, but an important adverse event that may be associated with their use is DKA. Mike covers a case series which provides a descriptive analysis of patients on SGLT-2 inhibitors who developed DKA.

Continuing the theme of diabetes management, Kieran takes the lead to share an article on the rates of hypoglygemia and hyperglycemia in nursing home patients nearing the end of life.

Next, Kieran shares a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on the long term effects of different diabetes prevention strategies on the incidence of diabetes.

Finally, the Good Stuff segment. Kieran shares an article on a new app designed to detect deterioration in an inpatient before cardiac arrest. Mike share an article on the first man to break the four minute mile.
